I want to share Carrie’s story with you. She is the first-time mom of a sweet 4-month old baby boy named Mason. During our initial conversation, Carrie shared how Mason went from waking up 2 times a night for a feeding to waking up every single hour of the night. Carrie and her partner were so exhausted and having a hard time getting through the day.
Not only was nighttime unsustainable, but the daytime was also hard. Everyone was overtired from fragmented sleep, and Mason was hardly napping. Carrie shared how she would spend 20-30 minutes nursing, rocking and bouncing him to sleep for each nap only to have him wake up 30 minutes later.
She was sleep deprived, frustrated and felt like a failure because she didn’t know how to help her son get better sleep.
I’m so happy to share that by night 2 of working together, Mason was falling asleep at bedtime in less than 10 minutes and down to 1 night feed. He was also taking 3 glorious naps. Two of which were 1.5-2 hours long.
Carrie and her partner are well-rested, enjoying the bedtime process and so happy to see their son getting restorative sleep.
What Does a Sleep Consultant Do?
A sleep consultant is a coach. Just like a coach in any other industry, a sleep coach is going to get you to your goals faster and with less stress. They hold your hand through the process, hold you accountable and take out the guesswork. No more Googling in the middle of the night.
As a sleep coach, I start with a free discovery call where we get to know each other a bit and I find out what sleep issues your little one is having. I want to make sure that we are a good fit. It’s important to feel comfortable with each other and for you to know that my program will work with your parenting philosophy. And, of course, I answer any questions you might have.
Here is how I teach you how to teach your baby, toddler or child to be an awesome sleeper:
I send you an intake form for you to complete so that I can write a sleep plan for your family. It’s the personalization that’s going to make all the difference.
We have a virtual video consultation and I go over the plan in detail. We talk about how you will handle bedtime, night wakings, night feeds and naps.
We work together for 3 weeks. We communicate regularly, I answer questions and tweak the plan until we’ve met your goals.
What it means is that you get an easy and enjoyable 30-minute bedtime routine, a baby that sleeps 11-12 hours a night (with maybe 1 feed) and better naps. That way, you and your partner can have a little time together in the evenings. What would YOU do with 2-3 child-free hours EACH night?
When to Hire a Sleep Consultant
You're Pregnant or Have a Newborn
Having a baby can be a confusing time. And I know from experience that most parents don’t know much about newborn sleep needs. Example, did you know a newborn baby can only stay awake 45-60 minutes before their little bodies need more sleep?
Newborns need support from their parents to fall asleep. There is a lot you can do during the first several months to help them establish a healthy sleep foundation so that when they are a bit older, they are already fabulous sleepers.
I work with my newborn clients with my newborn sleep package until their baby is 18-months old. Together, we slowly and gently teach their baby to be an awesome sleeper.
You Have Multiples
If you are the Mama of multiples, trying to juggle the feeding and sleep schedule can seem near impossible. Hire an expert to do it for you. It will simplify so much of the day as your baby grows and changes.
Your Reality Is Not Sustainable
Maybe it’s constant night feeds. Or co-sleeping when you didn’t plan on it. Or maybe you did plan on it and it’s not working for anyone in your home. Or maybe there are multiple kids in your bed and your partner is begrudgingly sleeping on the couch.
If your reality is keeping anyone in your family from quality sleep, hire a sleep consultant.
You Love to Be Coached
If you are a person that loves to be coached, using a sleep coach is no different. It’s just like hiring a fitness coach or a business coach. You will learn a ton and have support along the way.
You Are at Your Wit’s End
You have tried it all and nothing is working. You’ve tried sleep training, it worked for a while, but never sticks for long. I’m never anyone’s first go at working on sleep, but I’m the always the last because I will help you reach your goals and then teach you how to maintain the results. Don't assume that nothing will work with your child. It will!
You Are Not Enjoying Life or Motherhood
If bedtime is taking forever and your baby needs to be rocked, patted and swayed to sleep, it’s hard to enjoy the process. You can have an easy and enjoyable 30-minute bedtime. If your baby is waking up multiple times at night and you don’t know what to do, a sleep coach can help.
When you dread bedtime or have anxiety about what will happen in the middle of the night, it’s time to reach out for help. Having the predictability of an easy bedtime and a baby that sleeps through the night will change your life. It’s the reason I changed my career and now help families get the sleep they need.
Your Marriage is Struggling
This one is so personal, but it’s real. It’s hard to function without adequate sleep and our emotions are not regulated properly when we experience sleep deprivation.
Oftentimes parents disagree on the best way to handle a child’s sleep issues. A third party coming in to come up with a solution that fits your family’s needs is sometimes all it takes.
