Why Sleep Training Didn't Work

“I’ve tried everything to get my baby to sleep and nothing has worked.”  This is a sentence I hear in nearly every call I have with tired moms. These moms are desperate for answers, reading books, scrolling the internet and social media, asking friends for their secrets and even buying “one size fits all” sleep training programs. It can be extremely overwhelming to have contradictory information coming from all sides. How do you know who to trust?

When these moms finally book a discovery call with me, they feel defeated and relay sentiments of hopelessness. The most common fear: “Will my baby ever sleep through the night?”

My answer: Yes, your baby can sleep through the night.

Why isn't sleep training working if these moms have “tried everything”?

  • Most of the time, parents have tried a sleep training method for a few days and then try something else if they don’t see quick results. Now baby is confused. Consistency is key in sleep training. Babies thrive on routines and predictability. When parents give up too soon, it disrupts the learning process for the baby, leading to confusion about sleep expectations.

  • Parents often tell me what they are doing to fix the problem in the middle of the night, but they aren’t doing the same for bedtime. You can't allow the baby to fall asleep while feeding at bedtime and expect them to self-soothe during nighttime awakenings. Consistency with how baby falls asleep throughout the night helps them learn to fall asleep independently and sleep through the night.

  • Parents aren’t looking at the entire 24-hour day. When are naps? How long are naps? Understanding your baby's sleep needs throughout the day is crucial for nighttime sleep success. Naps play a significant role in regulating nighttime sleep patterns. A well-rested baby is more likely to sleep better at night.

  • Most new parents don’t know their baby’s sleep needs by age. Babies' sleep requirements evolve rapidly during their first year. Knowing what is developmentally appropriate for your baby's age helps set realistic sleep expectations and implement an effective sleep training plan tailored to their current stage of development.
